Sarawak has reached a historic milestone in its energy journey as Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) begins oil production at the Adong Kechil West field near Marudi.
The achievement marks the return of onshore oil production in Sarawak after more than 50 years, opening a new chapter for the state’s upstream and downstream energy industries.
A Historic Milestone for Sarawak
The Adong Kechil West field is currently producing approximately 800 barrels of oil per day, equivalent to around 24,000 barrels per month.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the milestone during the Sarawak Day 2026 celebration in Sibu, describing the achievement as a meaningful gift to the people of Sarawak.
Beyond the production figures, the milestone demonstrates Sarawak’s growing ability to explore, develop and manage its own oil and gas resources. It also reflects the technical capabilities of local engineers and industry professionals involved in advancing the state’s energy ambitions.
Supporting Sarawak’s Downstream Ambitions
The commencement of production is expected to support Sarawak’s broader strategy of creating greater value from its natural resources.
Rather than relying solely on the export of raw materials, the state aims to develop more value-added activities locally. These include downstream industries involving petrochemicals, methanol, fertiliser, ammonia, hydrogen and other high-value chemical products.
According to the Sarawak Premier, the new production places the state on the right path to further develop industries such as ammonia and blue hydrogen production. These developments could create additional high-skilled employment, business opportunities and technical capabilities within Sarawak.
Building Local Industry Capabilities
PETROS and Petra Energy began drilling activities at Block SK433 in October 2023 after the onshore petroleum contract was awarded to PETROS in 2021. The achievement of first oil represents an important outcome following years of exploration, planning and field-development activities.
As Sarawak expands its participation across the energy value chain, the demand for competent professionals in engineering, operations, safety, project management and commercial evaluation will continue to play an important role.
The milestone therefore represents more than the commencement of production. It reflects the development of local knowledge, industry experience and technical expertise required to manage increasingly complex energy projects.
