PETRONAS Advances Malaysia’s Upstream Sector with Agentic AI-Powered Data Platform

Malaysia’s upstream sector is taking another step towards a more data-driven future as PETRONAS moves to enhance its myPROdata platform with Agentic AI capabilities.

Through Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM), PETRONAS has signed an agreement with Iraya Energies Sdn Bhd to enhance myPROdata, a web-based platform that provides access to essential subsurface and surface data covering exploration blocks, discovered resource opportunities and producing fields in Malaysia.

Bringing AI Into Upstream Investment

The enhanced platform will integrate geological, geophysical, engineering and other relevant upstream data with Agentic AI capabilities.

Unlike conventional data platforms, the enhanced system is designed to autonomously analyse and connect multiple data sources, helping users navigate complex upstream information and derive insights more efficiently. It will also support end-to-end evaluation of opportunities, from identifying prospective areas and assessing resources to evaluating development potential and commercial viability.

For investors and industry players, this could help simplify the process of evaluating Malaysia’s upstream opportunities while supporting faster and more informed investment decisions.

Supporting Malaysia’s Upstream Ambitions

According to PETRONAS, the initiative supports its ambition to attract approximately RM50 billion to RM60 billion in annual upstream investments, while shortening the journey from discovery to first hydrocarbon from 100 months to 50 months.

Iraya Energies will serve as the Consortium Lead Integrator, establishing the technical, commercial and security foundations needed to deliver AI-powered insights and support the broader rollout of the programme.

The development highlights how digitalisation, data integration and artificial intelligence are increasingly becoming part of the upstream industry’s investment and decision-making landscape.

What This Means for the Industry

The move also reinforces an important shift across the oil and gas sector which is upstream expertise is increasingly being complemented by digital and data capabilities.

As operators, investors and technical professionals work with increasingly complex datasets, the ability to interpret information, connect multidisciplinary data and make timely decisions will become even more important.

For Malaysia’s upstream industry, the integration of Agentic AI into myPROdata represents another step towards a more connected, efficient and future-ready investment ecosystem.

At SEMARAK Training, we recognise that keeping pace with the evolving energy landscape requires professionals to continuously strengthen both their technical competencies and understanding of emerging industry developments.

The future of upstream is not only about finding resources — it is about making better decisions with the data, technology and expertise available.
