SEMARAK Training successfully conducted the Sand Production Prediction and Control in Oil and Gas Wells programme from 8 to 10 September 2026 at The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur.

The three-day programme brought together 13 industry professionals from six organisations, representing a range of upstream oil and gas disciplines and operational environments.

The programme provided participants with an in-depth exploration of sand production mechanisms, sanding prediction, sand control strategies, completion design, well productivity and integrated sand management.

Managing Sand Production Challenges in Oil & Gas Wells

Sand production is a major production challenge in sandstone fields, with potential impacts on wells, facilities and production operations.

Effective sand management requires an understanding of the relationship between formation strength, formation stresses, reservoir pressure depletion, drawdown, wellbore stability and production conditions.

The programme introduced participants to the geomechanical mechanisms behind formation failure and sanding onset, while also examining practical approaches for assessing sanding risks and predicting sand production behaviour.

The programme covered several key areas across the three days, including:

  • Fundamentals and mechanisms of sand production
  • Reservoir, well and completion factors influencing sanding
  • Formation failure and sanding onset prediction
  • Formation strength and stress characterisation
  • Reservoir pressure depletion and drawdown effects
  • Sand rate prediction and modelling
  • Transient and continuous sand production behaviour
  • Sand monitoring and production data interpretation

From Sand Prediction to Sand Control

A key focus of the programme was connecting sand production prediction with practical sand control and completion decisions.

Participants explored different sand control options, including standalone screens, gravel packs, frac packs and expandable sand screens, together with the factors involved in selecting and designing an appropriate sand control solution.

The programme also addressed particle size distribution, sieve analysis, completion design considerations, and the risks and limitations associated with different sand control completions.

A Practical and Industry-Focused Learning Experience

The training incorporated practical examples, field-based insights, case studies and group discussions to connect technical concepts with real-world field applications.

Participants worked through applications involving sanding risk evaluation, sand control selection and productivity evaluation, before discussing the development of a field sand management plan.

This practical approach supported the application of sand production prediction, control and management concepts across different well and reservoir conditions.

Strengthening Sand Management Capabilities

By the end of the programme, participants had developed stronger knowledge of how to assess sanding risks, apply sanding prediction methods, select suitable sand control strategies, evaluate well productivity and develop effective sand management approaches.
