SEMARAK Training successfully delivered the Introduction to Upstream Oil & Gas: Exploration to Decommissioning programme for delegates from Vestigo Petroleum Sdn. Bhd. from 19 to 20 May 2026 at DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur.
The two-day programme provided delegates with a comprehensive overview of the upstream oil and gas industry, covering the complete lifecycle of an oil and gas field—from petroleum exploration and drilling to field development, production operations, decommissioning and abandonment.
Designed for professionals from both technical and non-technical backgrounds, the programme helped delegates understand how activities across the upstream sector are interconnected. It also introduced essential industry terminology and highlighted the geological, technical, operational and economic considerations involved throughout the oilfield lifecycle.
Understanding the Complete Upstream Lifecycle
Throughout the programme, delegates explored key areas of upstream oil and gas operations, including:
- An overview of the upstream and downstream sectors
- The history and development of the oil and gas industry
- Malaysia’s oil and gas sector and different types of industry companies
- Petroleum geology, hydrocarbon formation and exploration activities
- Drilling rigs, drilling operations and different types of wells
- Well completion and field development planning
- Production facilities and offshore platform operations
- Health, safety and environmental considerations
- Production Sharing Agreements and typical project cash flow
- Decommissioning stages and practices in Malaysia
Practical examples, interactive discussions and industry case studies were incorporated throughout the training to help delegates connect the concepts presented with real-world upstream operations.
Connecting Technical and Business Functions
Upstream oil and gas projects require contributions from professionals across various departments and areas of expertise. While some employees may not be directly involved in field operations, understanding the upstream lifecycle can help them communicate more effectively and appreciate how their roles contribute to wider operational and business objectives.
Through clear explanations and engaging discussions, delegates developed a better understanding of upstream terminology, workflows and the interdependencies between exploration, drilling, field development, production and decommissioning.
Strengthening Industry Knowledge
By the end of the programme, delegates gained a clearer understanding of:
- The main activities within the upstream oil and gas sector
- The roles of different disciplines throughout an oilfield’s lifecycle
- The relationship between technical activities and commercial decisions
- The value chain across the petroleum industry
- The challenges involved in safely and economically producing hydrocarbons
SEMARAK Training extends its sincere appreciation to Vestigo Petroleum Sdn. Bhd. for the trust and opportunity to support the competency development of its delegates.
We also thank all participants for their active involvement, valuable discussions and positive contributions throughout the programme. We look forward to continuing our collaboration in developing knowledgeable and capable professionals for the oil and gas industry.
