This introduction course is designed to provide new drilling engineers and non-drilling professionals with an understanding of how wells are designed and drilled, the people and roles involved, equipment and services used to drill a well.
Introduction

This introduction course is designed to provide new drilling engineers and non-drilling professionals with an understanding of how wells are designed and drilled, the people and roles involved, equipment and services used to drill a well.

Objectives

The objectives of this course are to provide participants with an understanding of the drilling process from selection of a drilling location, well design, rig types and right through the drilling of a well. It is intended to provide a basic understanding of the process, the people, the equipment and terminology used by drilling engineers. The nontechnical support staff working for an operator or service provider often struggle to understand terms used and why certain questions are being asked. The course is designed to provide non-drilling staff with an understanding of how it all works.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the delegate will gain a basic understanding of:

  • Well design process,
  • Rig Types, Rig systems
  • Drilling tools
  • Bits and drillstring
  • Drilling fluids
  • Directional Drilling
  • Casing and Cementing
  • Drilling Challenges
  • Well Control
Methodology

The course method will be a combination of the following;

  • Lectures (presentation)
  • Discussions and exercises
  • Real/field case and Demonstration

Broken down as follows;

  • 60% Lectures and videos
  • 20% Discussions
  • 10% Case Studies & Practical Exercises
Who Should Attend?

This course is non-technical and is intended for personnel associated and involved with drilling and well construction operations. This course is suitable for new drilling engineers, logistics staff, HR, Contracts, Finance, Legal, IT and the other support services involved in oil and gas operations.
