Hazard Identification (HAZID) Facilitation

Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment for the maritime sector, also formerly called Marine or Maritime Risk Assessment (MRA), is a structured and systematic methodology, aimed at enhancing maritime safety, including safety of navigation, protection of life, health, the marine environment and property.
Introduction

Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment for the maritime sector, also formerly called Marine or Maritime Risk Assessment (MRA), is a structured and systematic methodology, aimed at enhancing maritime safety, including safety of navigation, protection of life, health, the marine environment and property. MRA can be used as a tool to help in the evaluation of procedures/work processes for maritime safety and protection of the marine environment or in making a comparison between existing and possibly improved procedures/work processes, with a view to achieving a balance between the various technical and operational issues, including the human element, and between maritime safety or protection of the marine environment and costs.

MRA is a legislative requirement in many countries, which require all known and potential risks associated with marine operations and activities to be accordingly assessed and mitigation or control measures prepared to minimize these risks to as Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP). These operations and activities may cover, inter alia, shipping, dredging, mining, cable and pipe laying, surveying, underwater operations and dumping of materials.

This 3-day course is designed for shore and ship staff who want to get a better understanding of the principles of risk assessment. Participants will learn the step by step approach, starting with hazard identification and working through risk assessment and finally to risk management. The course is highly interactive, switching regularly between input sessions using a presentation style and group work where participants will be involved in a variety of different activities (discussing, analyzing, applying, comparing, categorizing, etc.).

Learning Outcomes

This course is designed to help participants to:

  • Identify the hazards associated with marine/maritime activities
  • Assess the risks posed by those hazards
  • Eliminate the hazards or mitigate the hazards to reduce the risk to As Low As Reasonably Practicable
  • Perform risk assessments on all aspects of their companies’ businesses within their respective areas of responsibility where hazards are present
  • Become familiar with the appropriate risk assessment tools for MRAs.
Who Should Attend

This course is designed for shore and ship staff involved in implementation, maintenance and continuous improvement of a management system, e.g. safety, health, security, environmental and quality managers, operations managers, designated persons, company security officers, superintendents, masters, ship officers and engineers. Others: Personnel of maritime administrations, insurance firms, consultants, engineers.
